Part 1: "Musical Phrasing: Numbers that matter."
Part 2: "Dance Modes - Change with purpose."
3hr Fusion Dancing Workshop @ FlowState.Studio
π§π»βπ€ Part 1: "Musical Phrasing: Numbers that matter." π€
Fundamentally we're talking about why we count to eight and what it means dancers.
We'll talk about hitting our βoneβ of an eight count phrase, and how to look good doing it.Β We'll also be going over how to identify different phrases in a song, e.g the bridge, chorus, verse Etc, and how to use phrase changes as a way to incorporate musical styling into your dance. Expect a practice in intuitive listening, song deconstruction, and improving your ability to hear and perform the musical nuance of our favorite songs while you dance.
π§π»βπ€ Part 2: "Dance Modes - Change with purpose." π€
This class talks about Mode Switching as an emerging ideology in the fusion world. This is the idea that Fusion dancing is a series of different movement modalities or βModesβ that we specialize in switching between with intention, style and musicality. A basic example is the intentional switch between established dance styles, like Blues and say Tango mid dance. More nuanced examples might be changing connection points, step patterns, or the feeling of a movement from slow and gooey to fast and precise. We'll explore what a mode is, when we are using them and most importantly how we are intentionally communicating with our partner.

Ren Enby
Straight out of San Francisco, Ren (she/they) has a dance education mixing elements of West Coast Swing, Tango, Blues, Kizomba Hip Hop and Zouk.
Having traveled across a dozen states, and several countries teaching, dancing , djing, and organizing the Fusion community has become a home and sanctuary for her authentic expression as a trans fem, and lover of movement.
Teaching and Dance Experience
"I've been teaching Fusion Dance since 2018.
My dance education lies in West coast Swing, Tango, Blues, Kizomba and Hip Hop and Zouk. I've taught workshops at socials in San Diego, LA, Sacramento, San Francisco, Seattle, Denver, New York, South Carolina, Bristol (UK), and Berlin (Germany).
I also organized a monthly social in San Diego for 2 years where I taught at least 20 different classes. I have completed three separate 2 - 5 day fusion dance instructor programs, two of which were taught by Mark Carpenter and/or Flower Evelyn, and one by Jason Potell (LA based organizer and teacher). My education as a dancer is continuing this 2024 with a week long dance retreat called Myrtlewood Fusion Intensive in Oregon." - Ren Enby
Weekenders
"I've Taught at Hot Night Fusion Dance weekend (Denver), Queer Fusion weekend(Denver), Greenville Fusion Fest (South Carolina), Eclipse Fusions Antumbra (Boston) as a star instructor. 2024 will also include The Austin Fusion Festival in November." - Ren Enby
Teaching in General
"I've taught martial arts and weapons combat to adults and children for over a decade for various studios and community groups.
I've also taught fIlm and photography for over a decade to both adults and children for various non profits and business.
At this point as a Fusion Dancer I've traveled to 9 states and 5 countries to dance, teachΒ and train as an instructor and dancer in Fusion Dance. As a trans black person fusion has become the only dance community where I can express myself authentically and creatively without judgment. Fusion has definitely become my home, and teaching has become my means of sharing the love I have for Fusion dance with my community." - Ren Enby
Teaching Philosophy
"I essentially have a "left brain/right brain" approach to teaching. I believe that learning is most accessible when an analytical AND creative space can integrate in a student's experience. From a right brain perspective my classes will focus on embodying movements, training and trusting a somatic and physical intuition for movement, and swapping the narrative of self criticism with curiosity. From a left brain perspective classes can dive into everything from the biomechanical function of a movement to technique refining drills. They integrate in the form of group shares, partnered collaboration, playful interpretation, and exploring self and partnered critique and feedback. As often as possible I encourage not just how to do a move, but also why and how to change it by understanding it through a creative lens as much as a critical one. Finally, a priority for me as an instructor is making sure students have a practical and immediately applicable way of continuing their education out of the classroom. This can look like take home drills, videos, classes or other teacher recommendations, and of course recap videos." - Ren Enby
PATRICK HAUGEN will be around to check you in and ensure water is filled and assist with any other needs.
